Duncan Hook

In my current practice, obsessive repetitions of hand made marks are deliberately undermined by material processes outside my direct control.
The purpose of repetition is to emphasise the action of mark making which, although mechanical in nature, produces a varied and, more importantly, human result.
By conflicting this humanity with processes principally governed by chance, I aim to question the importance of artist’s labour within the making of contemporary art as well as bringing into focus the effects of time upon an artwork.
Within my most recent work, etching into metal plates, the object develops over a long period of time and can be used to make a record by printing and embossing onto paper. These visual histories, as well as being legitimate artworks in their own right, literally provide a trace for certain periods of time within the changing identity of the work.
