Kate Bullock

‘It is not what it means, but what it is’ My work has developed in part as a process, both in itself but also as a way of finding something specific through non representation.
I am interested in composition and materials, the physicality of the paint and the involvement of making the work is important to me. I have started to use a mix of different media on one canvas, acrylic, oils, gloss paint and charcoal. My decision to use different materials has been informed by wanting to make work that represents space and surface. I am interested in creating flatness but at the same time, seeking something with more depth.
My work is made in response to my surrounding. Recently I have become more interested in architectural structures. Line and form and the way the materials are applied are significant to the success of my work.

I have often struggled to establish were my work sits. Should it represent something in particular or is it simply a void or space. My recent practice is more representational in the sense that it hints at architectural forms. The relationship between the marks and the materials has become much more considered. Earlier works explored a collection of images, where as now I feel that I have developed a sophisticated language within my work that explores space and structure successfully.
